Gropper, William

Gropper, William
(1897-1979)
   Amercian cartoonist. Born in New York City, he studied at the Ferrer School and the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. He became a cartoonist for the New York Tribune, and later worked for The Rebel Worker, New Masses and the Sunday Worker, and the Yiddish paper, the Freiheit. During the 1920s and 1930s he contributed to the New Yorker and Vanity Fair. He also painted subjects dealing with American folklore and religional lifestyles as well as Jewish themes.
